ANNUAL DCCSC BBQ FUNDRAISER!  SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2023,

CARRICK PARK IN WEED, 4 - 7:30 PM

VIEW DCCSC BBQ 2023 IMAGES!

Over 100 Siskiyou Democrats enjoyed a very successful and fun fundraising picnic at Carrick Park in Weed on Saturday, June 24th. We had set a goal of raising $4000 and ended up making over $6000!

Guests enjoyed live music with Jimmy Limo! Guest Speakers at the BBQ included Angelina Cook who is running for BOS District 1, and Charnna Gilmore from the Scott River Watershed Council with an info/educational presentation.  We also congratulated the 2023 DCCSC Annual College Scholarship winner Athena Maniatis!

Some great times meeting with our friends and enjoying a lovely meal with great desserts. Thanks to everyone who attended! Note: If you want to make a donation (we'd love it!), you can do so through our website: siskiyoudemocrats.org or send a check to Siskiyou Democrats, PO Box 4, Mt. ANNUAL FOOD COLLECTION DRIVE- THRUS FOR OUR

NORTH AND SOUTH COUNTY FOOD BANKS IN YREKA AND MT. SHASTA!

North County Democrats and South County Democrats gathered several truckloads of food as well as cash donations this May and June. Thanks to all of you who donated! The contributions from the north were given to the Siskiyou Community Food Bank and the Yreka Food Bank; and those received in the south were given to South County Resource Centers' food banks and the Siskiyou Food Assistance

Siskiyou Democrats are committed to continue working against food insecurity in Siskiyou County, which stands at #2 in the state with the highest hunger and malnutrition rate.  In 2022 food insecurity impacted 16.2% of our population overall, 48.6% higher than the national average, while the child food insecurity rate was even higher at 22.5%, 54.1% higher than the national average.  These numbers can be expected to increase in the current year due both to the expiration in February, 2023 of federal supplemental food benefits provided during the pandemic and continuing higher than normal costs of food.

Our 2022 Food Drives provided about 3,000 pounds of non-perishable food to local food banks and community resource centers!  Working together we can address food insecurity in North and South Siskiyou County!  Volunteers needed!

SECOND ANNUAL SISKIYOU DEMOCRATS (DCCSC) SCHOLARSHIP
TO BE AWARDED IN 2023

UPDATE! Congratulations to the 2023 DCCSC Annual College Scholarship winner, Athena Maniatis! Athena will be attending Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Meet and congratulate her at the BBQ dinner on June 24th! (See image below!)

The Democratic Central Committee of Siskiyou County (DCCSC) believes that an educated society is the best way to develop a strong democracy and that education is one of the best means for individuals to improve not only their own lives, but contribute to a healthy society in diverse and productive ways. To support these beliefs, we are offering the second annual one-thousand-dollar ($1000) scholarship to a Siskiyou County high school graduate to be used for education at either a community college, college/university or business/technical/trade school .

The winner of our first annual college scholarship was Sam Shelly who graduated from Mount Shasta High School. Sam was a very impressive candidate who is studying astronomy this fall at the prestigious Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. We are so proud of him!

If you are interested in helping support future scholarships, please click here. Donations can also be mailed to: DCCSC PO Box 4 Mt Shasta, CA 96067.

WOMEN RUNNING FOR SUHSD BOARD WIN BIG!

As many of you are aware, the California GOP had a goal of overtaking school boards in the state and California Republicans bet big on local board races.

The Siskiyou Union High School District (SUHSD) was one of the districts targeted. As a result of significant non-partisan campaign efforts, the three strong women we supported won there! Thanks to all who knocked on doors, made phone calls, and spread the word. It paid off!

SUPPORTING FIRE VICTIMS

Supporting Fire Victims: On November 21, DCCSC members (l. to r.) Karen Zeigler, Pattie Crossen, and Carolyn Miller presented a $1,000 check to Siskiyou Community Resource Collaborative (SCRC), to support longterm fire relief efforts. Receiving the contribution were (r.) SCRC Board President Ken Palfini and (c.) Program Director Steve Bryan. Here, all pause to enjoy applause from seniors  attending the Monday Senior Lunch, held weekly at the Weed Community Center. Siskiyou Dems regularly serve an average of 65-75 community participants. SCRC coordinates and administers the event, and Weed City provides funds. Thanks to all our Dem donors, who made this donation possible.

SISKIYOU DEMS SERVE SENIORS

Since May 2021 Grassroots Democrats have served lunch to between 65 and 75 seniors at the Weed Community Center every Monday.  Administered by the Siskiyou Community Resource Collaboration, the program was closed for 20 months during the pandemic.  Previously set up as a buffet lunch, post Covid safety precautions required sit down service, masks until seated, maximum four per table and proof of vaccination, all of which have since been relaxed in 2023.  The re-opening was made possible in partnership with the Community Engagement Committee of South Siskiyou Democrats, providing volunteer staffing sit-down service.

Meals are provided by four different local vendors: Ellie’s and Pizza Factory in Weed or Mt. Shasta Market and Casa Ramos in Mt. Shasta. Paid for by ¼ cent sales tax passed by the City of Weed, the senior lunch is open to all seniors in the area.

The sit-down service, enthusiastically embraced by the seniors, provides a relaxed atmosphere for connection, extended conversation and enjoyment of the delicious meals.  Announcements at the beginning of each meal include an acknowledgement of Siskiyou Democrats’ on-going service, which always receives hearty applause. Our regular volunteers are an energetic team enjoying their participation with each other and the participants, while setting the tone for positive socialization.

SUPPORTING VICTIMS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Supporting Victims of Domestic Violence: Each year, Siskiyou Democrats give personal necessity gift bags to the Siskiyou Domestic Violence and Crisis Center (SDVCC). At left, DCCSC Chair, Alice Rogers (right), presented the gift bags to the SDVCC Director, Carla Charraga, who expressed the center’s gratitude for our support. The Center provides a number of services to the community, including a 24-hour hotline and crisis response, emergency shelter, sexual assault advocacy, counseling and information/referral. If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the office at 530-842-6629 or toll free at 877-842-4068

Paid for by Democratic Central Committee
