Primary Overview
On February 4th, the Supreme Court allowed California to use the new Congressional maps identified by Proposition 50, so Siskiyou County will move from CD1 to CD2 effective in January 2027. There are three northern California counties which will be added to CD2: Modoc, Shasta and Siskiyou.
For the June 2, 2026 primary, Siskiyou County has an interesting ballot. We will be voting for the replacement for CD1 Doug LaMalfa who passed away, and then voting for the primary candidate for CD2 who will be on the November 2026 ballot.
Congressional Elections for Siskiyou County:
Short Term (CD1) & Long Term (CD2)
On the one primary ballot you will receive (it will be long due to the number of candidates for Governor), there will be two votes for Congressional representation (CD1 and CD2) for Siskiyou County.
We are in CD1 until January 2027 and will vote for a replacement for LaMalfa. Then, we will be part of CD2 (due to Prop 50 redistricting) and vote for a candidate for the November election. Here a description of the two votes:
1. Short-term Replacement for Doug LaMalfa (CD1) - Doug LaMalfa passed away early this year and the remainder of his term must be filled by the voters. The candidates running are: Audrey Denney (D), James Gallagher (R), Mike McGuire (D), Richard Montgomery (No party preference), and Jot Thiara (R).
To win "outright" on June 2nd, one of the candidates must get 50% + 1 of the vote. With the number of candidates running, it is unlikely this will happen. A runoff election between the top two vote getters will be held on August 4th. (For this short-term replacement, no candidate has been endorsed by the California Democratic party.)
2. Long-term Primary Vote for our New District (CD2) - In addition to the short-term replacement, we will also need to vote for the candidates to appear on the November 2026 ballot for our permanent position where the top two move on to November. (For the CD2 Congressional office, Jared Huffman, the incumbent, has been endorsed by the California Democratic Party.)
