About 400 individuals attended the Yreka "No Kings" Protest on 10/18/25.

SHOWING UP FOR DEMOCRACY IN SISKIYOU COUNTY!

About 1200 showed up for the "No Kings" protests in Siskiyou County - 800 in Mt. Shasta and 400 in Yreka!  This total outdid our June "No Kings" day where we had about 1000 attend.  And, in Yreka, we had several cars "cruising up and down Main Street" to honk their support for the protest.  A great day in both locations!  The Siskiyou Resistance Coalition did a terrific job organizing the events, which also included a "banner drop" on I-5 in Dunsmuir.

Speaking to several "first time" protesters in Yreka, a key remark was how good it felt to be out with their neighbors and that so MANY of them felt the exact same way they did.  The mood was light and fun and laughter could be heard frequently.  Yet the signs they held were serious.  People are upset, worried, and angry; they want our democracy restored.

Siskiyou County residents joined the estimated seven (7) million Americans nationwide who attended "No Kings" to protest what is going on.  That is an increase of two (2) million from June.  People are showing up.  And, all reports were that the protests were peaceful - contradicting the scare tactics being used by the Republicans.

Q&A on Proposition 50:
The Election Rigging Response Act.
For more information, visit the Prop 50 website: stopelectionrigging.com

Q: Why is Governor Newsom proposing a redistricting ballot measure?
A: To counter Republican-led gerrymandering efforts—especially in Texas—aimed at gaining House seats before 2026. Newsom’s plan allows California to adjust its maps if GOP states rig theirs.

Q: What’s the emergency?
A: Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are making an unprecedented power grab to steal congressional seats and rig the 2026 election before voting even begins. Other Republican states are following suit.

Q: Why does California have a duty to act?
A: California has a duty to defend democracy. We can’t unilaterally disarm or fight with both hands tied behind our backs. This is democracy’s best bet against partisan power grabs.

Q: What does the measure propose?
A: The Election Rigging Response Act would:

  • Level the playing field, ensuring the 2026 mid‑term elections are conducted on a level playing field without an unfair advantage for Republicans.

  • Give voters the power to approve emergency congressional maps by special election.

  • Be fair and proportional—maps counter Republican gerrymandering like Texas as they move forward with their power grab.

  • Be temporary, with maps expiring in 2030, while reaffirming the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s authority post‑2030 census.

Q: Who supports the plan?
Leading supporters include:

  • Governor Gavin Newsom

  • U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff

  • House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Speaker-emeritus Nancy Pelosi

  • California Labor Federation, California Teachers Association, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, SEIU California, California Nurses' Association, California Democratic Party

Q: What’s the timeline and process?

  • Ballots were mailed on or around October 6

  • Voters decide on November 4 (special election).

  • If passed, emergency maps apply for 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.

Q: What’s at stake in 2026?
A: Democracy. Redistricting could be the difference between checking Trump’s power or handing him a blank check.
